Beginner's Guide to Sea of Thieves
New to the seas? This guide covers everything you need to survive your first voyage.
Your First Voyage
- 1Start on a Sloop. It is the easiest ship to manage solo or with one friend.
- 2Check the voyage table on your ship to vote on and start a voyage.
- 3Use the map table below deck to track your current quest objectives.
- 4Stock up on supplies from barrels at the outpost before setting sail.
- 5Bananas heal you, planks repair your ship, and cannonballs are ammunition.
Sailing Basics
- 1Raise and lower sails using the ropes at each mast. Lowered sails = more speed.
- 2Angle your sails to catch the wind (the white streaks in the air show wind direction).
- 3Use the wheel to steer. The gold spoke on the wheel marks the center position.
- 4Raise sails before turning for tighter maneuvers near rocks and islands.
- 5Drop anchor only in emergencies. Raise sails to stop safely instead.
Earning Gold & Reputation
- 1Sell treasure chests to the Gold Hoarders at any outpost.
- 2Sell skulls to the Order of Souls at any outpost.
- 3Sell cargo, crates, and animals to the Merchant Alliance at any outpost.
- 4Raise an Emissary Flag at an outpost to multiply your gold and reputation gains.
- 5Higher emissary grade (I-V) means bigger multipliers. Grade V unlocks a special quest.
Staying Alive
- 1Eat bananas, coconuts, or cooked meat to heal. Cooked meat gives health regeneration.
- 2Watch for red water around your ship -- sharks and megalodons patrol the open seas.
- 3If your ship is sinking, repair holes with planks first, then bail water with a bucket.
- 4Skeletons on islands can be deadly in groups. Use a cutlass for regular skeletons.
- 5If you die, you respawn on your ship. If your ship sinks, you respawn at a new location.
Essential Tips
- 1Always check the horizon for other ships. Not all pirates are friendly.
- 2Use the crow's nest lookout for the best view of approaching threats.
- 3Store your treasure below deck to hide it from other crews.
- 4Sell treasure frequently. Do not hoard it all for one trip.
- 5Play with a microphone. Communication with your crew is key to success.
