Beginner's Guide to Baldur's Gate 3
New to BG3 or D&D? This guide covers the fundamentals you need to adventure through Faerun.
D&D 5e Basics
- 1BG3 uses Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition rules. Dice rolls determine success.
- 2Ability Scores (STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA) define your character.
- 3Modifier = (Score - 10) / 2. A 16 STR gives +3 modifier to STR checks.
- 4Proficiency Bonus starts at +2 and increases with level.
- 5Advantage (roll 2d20, take higher) and Disadvantage (take lower) are key mechanics.
Choosing Your Class
- 1Fighter and Paladin are the easiest classes for new players.
- 2Wizard has the most spells but is fragile. Start with Fighter for simplicity.
- 3Your class determines hit points, proficiencies, and available abilities.
- 4Multiclassing is powerful but complex. Stick to single class first playthrough.
- 5Subclass is chosen at level 1-3 depending on class. It defines your specialization.
Combat Essentials
- 1Each turn: 1 Action, 1 Bonus Action, 1 Reaction, and Movement.
- 2High ground gives +2 to ranged attack rolls. Always seek elevation.
- 3Shoving enemies off cliffs is incredibly effective and costs only a Bonus Action.
- 4Short Rests restore some HP and abilities. Long Rests restore everything.
- 5Concentration spells end if you cast another Concentration spell or fail a save.
Exploration Tips
- 1Save frequently. Quicksave (F5) before every major decision or fight.
- 2Talk to every NPC. Side quests give valuable XP and unique rewards.
- 3Use Perception checks to find hidden items, traps, and passages.
- 4Companions can be respecced at Withers in your camp for 100 gold.
- 5Some solutions require specific ability scores. Bring the right party member.
Party Composition
- 1A balanced party needs: melee tank, healer, damage dealer, and utility.
- 2Recommended first party: Custom Fighter, Shadowheart, Gale, Astarion.
- 3You can have 4 party members active at once. Others wait at camp.
- 4Companions gain XP even when not in the active party.
- 5Respect your companions' preferences to unlock their personal quests.
