Building Tiers

ARK has 4 building tiers: Thatch (weakest, unlocked immediately), Wood (better protection, unlocked early), Stone (strong, mid-game), and Metal (strongest, late-game). Tek tier exists but requires boss defeats and Element. Always upgrade to stone as soon as possible to survive basic raids.

Best Base Locations

Look for locations near water, metal nodes, and a flat area. Popular spots include: Hidden Lake (safe, resource-rich), Red Obelisk area (central), Herbivore Island (isolated, safe from most threats), and Carno Island (defensible). Avoid building near swamps, redwood forests, or active volcanoes on The Island.

Defense Strategies

Place Plant Species X turrets around your base for early defense. Auto turrets (metal tier) are the best defense against both players and wild dinos. Use behemoth gates for your perimeter. Layer your defenses: outer wall, turret ring, inner base. Keep your most valuable items in the innermost room with the most walls.

Essential Base Structures

Every base needs: Storage (Large Storage Boxes, Vaults), Crafting (Smithy, Fabricator, Industrial Forge, Chemistry Bench), Taming (Taming Pen with dino gates), Power (Generator + Gasoline), and Dino Storage (Cryofridge for Cryopods). Plan your layout before building.

Advanced Tips

Use pillar + ceiling combos for floating bases. Snap points can be tricky - use fence foundations for precise placement. Behemoth gates make the best taming pens. Cliff platforms allow building on vertical surfaces. Always keep a backup generator and auto turrets powered. Consider building multiple small bases instead of one large one for redundancy.
