Beginner's Guide to Street Fighter 6
New to Street Fighter 6? This guide covers everything you need to know: controls, game modes, Drive System basics, and how to start improving.
Control Types
- 1SF6 offers three control types: Classic, Modern, and Dynamic. Start with Modern for simplified inputs.
- 2Classic controls use traditional motion inputs (quarter-circle, Z-motion) and offer full move access.
- 3Modern controls use one-button specials and auto-combos but reduce overall damage by about 20%.
- 4Dynamic controls auto-perform combos and specials based on spacing. Great for absolute beginners.
- 5You can switch control types at any time. Many players start Modern and transition to Classic.
Game Modes
- 1World Tour is the single-player story mode. Great for learning mechanics at your own pace.
- 2Battle Hub is the online social hub where you can play casuals, arcade machines, and find matches.
- 3Ranked Match is the competitive mode with the league system from Rookie to Master.
- 4Training Mode has extensive features: frame data display, combo trials, and replay analysis.
- 5Arcade Mode offers character-specific storylines with AI opponents of increasing difficulty.
Basic Movement and Defense
- 1Walk forward and backward to control spacing. Walking is fundamental to fighting games.
- 2Crouch block (hold down-back) blocks both mid and low attacks. Stand block for overheads.
- 3Jumping is risky in SF6. Anti-air attacks deal heavy damage. Use jumps sparingly and unpredictably.
- 4Forward dash is fast but vulnerable. Back dash has invincibility frames at startup.
- 5Throws beat blocking. If your opponent is blocking too much, walk up and throw them.
Drive System Basics
- 1The Drive Gauge has 6 bars and powers all Drive mechanics. It refills over time.
- 2Drive Parry (MP+MK hold) blocks all attacks and refills gauge on success. Your best defensive tool.
- 3Drive Impact (HP+HK) is an armored attack that causes wall splat. Use it to punish predictable offense.
- 4Drive Rush (forward forward during Parry or cancel) gives frame advantage for combos.
- 5Running out of Drive Gauge causes Burnout. Avoid this by not overusing Drive mechanics.
Choosing Your First Character
- 1Luke is the most beginner-friendly character with straightforward moves and strong fundamentals.
- 2Cammy has simple inputs, fast moves, and easy-to-learn combos that remain effective at all levels.
- 3Ed uses simple button inputs for specials instead of motion inputs, making execution very easy.
- 4Ryu teaches classic fighting game fundamentals: fireballs, anti-airs, and spacing.
- 5Pick a character you think looks cool. Motivation to play your character matters more than tier lists.
Improving Your Play
- 1Spend time in Training Mode daily. Even 10 minutes of practice builds muscle memory.
- 2Focus on one skill at a time: first learn combos, then anti-airs, then spacing, then mix-ups.
- 3Watch tournament matches and high-level replays of your character to learn strategies.
- 4Do not worry about losing in ranked. Every loss is a learning opportunity. Focus on improving, not winning.
- 5Join the SF6 community on Discord or Reddit. Other players can provide matchup advice and tips.
