Beginner's Guide to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
New to Sekiro? This guide covers the essential mechanics you need to master.
The Posture System
- 1Posture is the core combat mechanic -- both you and enemies have a posture bar that fills when deflecting or taking hits.
- 2When an enemy's posture bar fills completely, they become vulnerable to a deathblow -- an instant kill.
- 3Deflect (tap block at the moment of impact) to deal massive posture damage to enemies without taking vitality damage.
- 4Your own posture recovers faster when holding block, but enemies' posture recovers based on their remaining vitality.
- 5Lower an enemy's vitality first to slow their posture recovery, then focus on filling their posture bar with deflects.
- 6Posture breaks are the primary way to defeat bosses -- pure vitality damage is extremely slow.
Mikiri Counter
- 1Mikiri Counter is the single most important skill in the game -- unlock it immediately from the Shinobi skill tree.
- 2When you see the red danger kanji followed by a thrust attack, dodge FORWARD into it to stomp the weapon.
- 3A successful Mikiri Counter deals enormous posture damage and is your best tool against thrust-heavy bosses.
- 4The timing is generous -- press dodge toward the enemy as the thrust comes. Do not dodge sideways.
- 5Many bosses like Genichiro and Isshin use frequent thrust attacks that Mikiri Counter trivializes.
- 6Practice on the Undying training partner at the Dilapidated Temple until the timing is muscle memory.
Resurrection Mechanic
- 1Wolf can resurrect once (or more) after dying, getting back up with half health to continue fighting.
- 2You start with one resurrection node. Additional nodes are unlocked through story progression and Prayer Beads.
- 3Resurrection has a cooldown -- you cannot resurrect twice in a row without performing a deathblow first.
- 4Using resurrection inflicts Dragonrot on NPCs, which can temporarily lock their questlines.
- 5Dragonrot can be cured with Dragon's Blood Droplets, so do not be afraid to use resurrection when needed.
- 6Unseen Aid (chance to keep sen and XP on true death) decreases as Dragonrot spreads.
Sculptor's Idols & Exploration
- 1Sculptor's Idols are your rest and fast-travel points -- resting restores health, Spirit Emblems, and respawns enemies.
- 2Always explore thoroughly before moving to the next area -- Prayer Beads and Gourd Seeds are missable.
- 3Collect 4 Prayer Beads to create a Prayer Necklace, permanently increasing your vitality and posture.
- 4Gourd Seeds given to Emma at the Dilapidated Temple increase your Healing Gourd uses (up to 10).
- 5Eavesdrop on enemy conversations (crouch near them) for hints about boss weaknesses and hidden paths.
- 6Grapple points are everywhere -- always look up. Vertical exploration reveals many hidden items and shortcuts.
Esoteric Texts & Combat Arts
- 1Esoteric Texts unlock new skill trees -- find them by exploring and defeating certain enemies.
- 2The Shinobi Esoteric Text is given early and contains essential skills like Mikiri Counter.
- 3Combat Arts are equipped skills activated with a button combo -- you can only have one active at a time.
- 4Ichimonji: Double is widely considered the best combat art for most of the game due to posture recovery.
- 5Latent skills (like Mikiri Counter and Ascending/Descending Carp) are always active once unlocked.
- 6Prioritize latent skills and Mikiri Counter early, then branch into combat arts based on your playstyle.
