Beginner's Guide to Guild Wars 2
New to Guild Wars 2? This guide covers everything from choosing your first profession to understanding combat, crafting, and endgame activities.
Getting Started
- 1Guild Wars 2 has no subscription fee. Buy the game once (or play the core game for free) and access all content without monthly payments.
- 2Choose from 9 professions (classes). Each plays very differently, but all are viable for endgame content.
- 3Your character level caps at 80. After that, you earn Mastery Points and Hero Points for horizontal progression.
- 4Explore the map thoroughly. Hearts, events, vistas, hero challenges, and points of interest all grant experience and rewards.
- 5Join a guild early. GW2 allows you to be in up to 5 guilds simultaneously, so there is no commitment pressure.
Combat System
- 1GW2 uses action-oriented combat with dodge rolls, positioning, and combo fields. Standing still will get you killed.
- 2Your weapon determines your first 5 skills. Swap weapons mid-combat (at level 7+) to adapt to situations.
- 3Combo fields and finishers create powerful effects. For example, a fire field + blast finisher gives AoE Might to allies.
- 4Break bars (defiance bars) appear on champions and bosses. Use crowd control skills to break them for a damage window.
- 5Reviving downed allies is always worth it. A full party does far more damage than leaving someone dead.
Crafting & Economy
- 1There are 9 crafting disciplines. Each character can learn 2 at a time (swap for a fee). Level crafting to 500 for ascended gear.
- 2The Trading Post is the global auction house. Check prices before selling materials — some are worth far more than vendor price.
- 3Gold-to-Gems conversion lets you buy cash shop items with in-game gold. Save up for convenience items like shared inventory slots.
- 4Daily achievements reward 2 gold per day. Complete 3 daily tasks for consistent income.
- 5Salvage everything you do not need. Salvage kits turn gear into crafting materials that sell well on the Trading Post.
Endgame Content
- 1Fractals of the Mists are 5-player dungeons with scaling difficulty tiers (1-100). They are the primary PvE endgame alongside raids.
- 2Raids are 10-player encounters requiring coordination and proper builds. Start with training runs to learn mechanics.
- 3World vs World (WvW) is large-scale PvP where three servers fight over objectives on four maps. Drop in anytime.
- 4Structured PvP (sPvP) uses normalized stats so gear does not matter. Great for competitive players from any level.
- 5Living World seasons add new maps, story, and rewards. Episodes can be unlocked with gems if you missed the original release window.
Pro Tips
- 1Use the wiki command: type /wiki in chat followed by any term to instantly open the GW2 Wiki page for it.
- 2Mount masteries from Path of Fire and End of Dragons dramatically change gameplay. Prioritize unlocking the Raptor and Springer first.
- 3Elite specializations from expansions add a new weapon and completely change how your profession plays. They are often stronger than core builds.
- 4Waypoint costs add up. Use the free waypoints in cities and Lion's Arch to save gold while leveling.
- 5Deposit all materials from your inventory with one click (gear icon > Deposit All Materials). Your material storage holds 250 of each type.
