Beginner's Guide to Honkai: Star Rail
New to Star Rail? This guide covers paths, elements, combat, and progression basics.
Understanding Paths
- 1Paths determine a character role: Destruction (DPS), Hunt (single-target), Erudition (AoE), Harmony (buffer), Nihility (debuffer), Preservation (tank), Abundance (healer).
- 2A balanced team typically includes 1 DPS (Destruction/Hunt/Erudition), 1 Support (Harmony), and 1 Sustain (Preservation/Abundance).
- 3Nihility characters like Kafka and Silver Wolf provide debuffs that amplify team damage.
- 4Harmony characters like Bronya and Tingyun are essential for buffing your main DPS output.
- 5Light Cones are path-locked -- you can only equip them on characters with the matching Path.
- 6The fourth team slot is flexible -- use a second DPS, debuffer, or sustain based on the content.
Elements & Weakness Break
- 1There are 7 elements: Physical, Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, Quantum, and Imaginary.
- 2Every enemy has 1-3 elemental weaknesses shown above their HP bar.
- 3Hitting an enemy weakness reduces their Toughness bar -- breaking it stuns them and deals Break damage.
- 4Weakness Break effects differ by element: Physical bleeds, Fire burns, Ice freezes, Lightning shocks, Wind delays, Quantum entangles, Imaginary imprisons.
- 5Matching elements to enemy weaknesses is crucial for efficiently clearing content.
- 6Some characters like Silver Wolf can implant weaknesses, bypassing the natural weakness system.
Turn-Based Combat
- 1Combat is turn-based with an action order displayed at the top of the screen.
- 2Speed (SPD) determines how often a character acts -- higher SPD means more frequent turns.
- 3Skill Points (SP) are a shared team resource -- Skills cost 1 SP, Basic Attacks generate 1 SP.
- 4Manage SP carefully: do not use Skills on every turn if your team is SP-hungry.
- 5Ultimates can be used at any time when the energy bar is full, even during enemy turns.
- 6Break Effect amplifies the damage and debuff duration when you break an enemy Toughness bar.
Character Progression
- 1Level characters to the current cap (20/40/50/60/70/80) by using EXP materials and Ascension items.
- 2Traces are the skill upgrade system -- prioritize your main DPS Skill and Ultimate traces first.
- 3Light Cones provide the largest stat boost -- always level your DPS Light Cone to max.
- 4Relics are the endgame gear system -- start farming at Equilibrium Level 3+ for better drops.
- 5Eidolons (duplicate characters) provide powerful upgrades but are not required for any content.
- 6Focus investment on 4-8 characters for 2 complete teams rather than spreading resources.
Daily & Weekly Routine
- 1Complete Daily Training missions for Stellar Jade (premium currency) and resources.
- 2Spend Trailblaze Power (stamina) on Relic farming, Ascension materials, or EXP/Credit stages.
- 3Do Echo of War weekly bosses for Trace and Light Cone materials.
- 4Complete Simulated Universe runs weekly for Planar Ornaments and Herta store currency.
- 5Check the Nameless Honor (battle pass) for additional rewards and track weekly point progress.
- 6Save Stellar Jade for limited 5-star character banners rather than spending on standard banner.
