Beginner's Guide to The Binding of Isaac
New to Isaac? This guide covers everything you need to know: controls, health, room types, item synergies, and strategies for your first successful runs.
Understanding the Basics
- 1The Binding of Isaac is a roguelike. Each run is different with random items, rooms, and bosses.
- 2You shoot tears (projectiles) in four cardinal directions using arrow keys or the right analog stick.
- 3Your goal is to descend through floors, defeat bosses, and reach one of several final bosses.
- 4When you die, you start over. Progress is saved through permanent unlocks.
- 5The game has hundreds of items, and learning what they do is a big part of improving.
Health System
- 1Red Hearts are your main health. Heart Containers hold them.
- 2Soul Hearts act as extra armor above red hearts. They do not regenerate.
- 3Black Hearts work like Soul Hearts but deal damage to all enemies when depleted.
- 4Eternal Hearts are half-hearts that become a full Heart Container if you finish the floor.
- 5Some characters like The Lost have no health at all and die in one hit.
Room Types
- 1Treasure Rooms contain a free item pedestal. The first floor one never requires a key.
- 2Shop rooms sell items and pickups for coins. They improve as you donate more.
- 3Boss Rooms always contain a boss. Defeating it drops an item and opens the next floor.
- 4Devil Rooms may appear after bosses. Items cost Heart Containers but are very powerful.
- 5Angel Rooms replace Devil Rooms if you skip Devil deals. They offer free holy items.
- 6Secret Rooms are hidden and found by bombing walls between rooms.
Item Synergies
- 1Items in Isaac stack and combine. Two damage-up items multiply your power.
- 2Some items transform your tears entirely (Brimstone, Mom's Knife, Tech X).
- 3Collecting three items from the same set grants a transformation (e.g., Guppy gives flight and spawns flies).
- 4Active items can only be held one at a time unless you have special items like Schoolbag.
- 5Trinkets provide small passive bonuses. Only one can be held at a time by default.
Early Run Strategy
- 1Explore every room on each floor before going to the boss.
- 2Save keys for Treasure Rooms and Shops first.
- 3Use bombs on tinted rocks (marked with an X) for Soul Hearts and pickups.
- 4Avoid taking red heart damage before the boss to maximize Devil/Angel Room chances.
- 5Learn boss attack patterns. Most bosses are predictable once you know their tells.
Recommended Starting Characters
- 1Isaac (with D6) is the most versatile. Reroll bad items into better ones.
- 2Azazel is great for beginners. Flight and Brimstone make early floors trivial.
- 3Magdalene has extra health and a healing item, making her very forgiving.
- 4Avoid The Lost and Keeper until you are experienced. They are extremely difficult.
- 5Eden is fun for variety but costs an Eden Token, earned by defeating Mom's Heart.
