Beginner's Guide to Counter-Strike 2

New to CS2? This guide covers movement, shooting, economy, communication, and how to start improving.

Movement Fundamentals

  • 1Stop moving before shooting. Movement makes bullets inaccurate.
  • 2Counter-strafe: tap the opposite direction key to stop instantly before firing.
  • 3Walk (Shift) when near enemies to make your footsteps silent.
  • 4Learn to bunny hop: jump and strafe in the air to maintain speed.
  • 5Crouch-peeking is useful for short angles but makes you slow. Use sparingly.

Shooting Mechanics

  • 1Always aim at head level. Crosshair placement wins most gunfights.
  • 2First bullet accuracy: the first shot is always most accurate. Make it count.
  • 3Spray control: pull your mouse down to counter recoil. Each weapon has a unique pattern.
  • 4Burst fire at medium range (2-3 bullets). Single tap at long range.
  • 5Never run and shoot except with SMGs at close range.

Game Modes

  • 1Competitive: 5v5, best of 30 rounds (MR12 overtimes). Main ranked mode.
  • 2Deathmatch: Free-for-all practice mode. Great for warming up aim.
  • 3Casual: Relaxed 10v10 mode with no rank impact. Good for learning maps.
  • 4Premier: Competitive with map bans. Uses CS Rating instead of rank icons.
  • 5Wingman: 2v2 on smaller maps. Good for practicing with a friend.

Communication

  • 1Use callouts: learn the map location names to communicate enemy positions.
  • 2Call out enemy count, location, and health if you know it.
  • 3Do not clutter comms during clutch situations. Let the clutcher focus.
  • 4Use the ping system (middle mouse) to mark positions without talking.
  • 5Be positive and constructive. Toxicity loses games more than bad aim.

First Steps

  • 1Play Deathmatch for 15-30 minutes to warm up before competitive.
  • 2Learn one map well before expanding (Dust II or Mirage recommended).
  • 3Watch professional matches to learn positioning and utility usage.
  • 4Practice on community workshop maps for aim training and smoke lineups.
  • 5Focus on improving one thing at a time: crosshair placement, then spray, then utility.
