Beginner's Guide to Monster Hunter Rise
New to MH Rise? This guide covers weapon selection, combat mechanics, quests, and endgame preparation.
Getting Started
- 1Monster Hunter Rise is an action RPG where you hunt large monsters, carve materials, and craft better gear to take on tougher hunts.
- 2Start by completing the Village quests -- they serve as the single-player tutorial and story campaign.
- 3Visit the Training Area from your room to practice weapon combos, Silkbind attacks, and Wirebug movement before heading out.
- 4Talk to every NPC in Kamura Village -- many unlock important features like the Meowcenaries, Argosy, and Buddy Dojo.
- 5Always eat Bunny Dango at the Canteen before every quest for health, stamina, and special skill buffs.
Choosing Your Weapon
- 1There are 14 weapon types in Monster Hunter Rise -- each plays completely differently with unique combos and mechanics.
- 2Sword and Shield, Hammer, and Light Bowgun are the most beginner-friendly weapons with straightforward playstyles.
- 3Long Sword and Dual Blades are popular for their fluid combat and counter mechanics but require practice to master.
- 4Try every weapon in the Training Area before committing -- you can craft and switch weapons freely at any time.
- 5Your weapon choice determines your entire playstyle -- there are no classes, your weapon IS your class.
Basic Combat Mechanics
- 1Wirebugs are your core movement tool -- use ZL+X and ZL+A to zip through the air and perform Silkbind attacks.
- 2Wyvern Riding activates when you deal enough Silkbind or mounting damage -- ride the monster to slam it into walls for big damage.
- 3Sharpness affects your damage -- when your weapon bounces off a monster, you need to sharpen with a Whetstone.
- 4Each monster has weak points (usually the head) and resistant zones -- focus attacks on weak points for maximum damage.
- 5Learn to use the Petalace system -- collect Spiribirds in the field to temporarily boost your health, stamina, attack, and defense.
Village vs Hub Quests
- 1Village quests are single-player only and scale for one hunter -- they are the main story and tutorial progression.
- 2Hub quests scale for multiplayer (2-4 hunters) even when playing solo -- they are harder but offer better rewards.
- 3You can join Hub quests online by posting or joining quests via the Quest Board or Senri the Mailman.
- 4Village and Hub quests have separate progression tracks -- completing Village unlocks Urgent quests to advance the story.
- 5Special License Tests let you skip early Hub quests if you have already cleared the equivalent Village ranks.
Endgame Preparation
- 1After finishing Village and Hub quests, focus on crafting High Rank armor sets with useful skills like Critical Eye and Attack Boost.
- 2Start farming Decorations at the Melding Pot -- decorations socket into armor to add or boost skills.
- 3Talisman farming becomes important in endgame -- meld talismans at the Smithy using monster materials.
- 4If you own Sunbreak, Master Rank content begins after completing the base game -- your High Rank gear will be outclassed quickly.
- 5Join multiplayer lobbies or use the Join Request system to find other hunters for difficult quests -- teamwork makes hunts faster and easier.
