Beginner's Guide to World of Warcraft
New to WoW? This guide covers character creation, leveling, dungeons, professions, and endgame content.
Getting Started & Character Creation
- 1Choose a race and class combination that appeals to you -- racial abilities exist but are minor; play what you enjoy.
- 2Each class can fill specific roles: Tank, Healer, or DPS. Some classes (Druid, Paladin, Monk) can do all three.
- 3Start on a Normal or Full server -- avoid RP servers unless you enjoy roleplaying.
- 4The game guides you through a starting zone tutorial -- follow the quest markers to learn basic controls.
- 5Your first character should focus on the main story campaign to unlock endgame features.
Leveling & Questing
- 1Follow the main campaign questline marked with a shield icon -- it unlocks important features as you level.
- 2Side quests (marked with yellow exclamation marks) give extra XP and gear but are optional.
- 3Dungeon finder unlocks at level 10 -- queue for dungeons while questing for bonus XP and gear.
- 4War Mode (open-world PvP) gives an XP bonus but lets other players attack you -- toggle it in Stormwind or Orgrimmar.
- 5Heirloom gear purchased with gold provides XP bonuses and scales with your level.
Understanding Dungeons & Raids
- 1Dungeons are 5-player instances: 1 Tank, 1 Healer, 3 DPS. Queue through the Group Finder (default key: I).
- 2As a new tank or healer, watch a quick video guide for each dungeon before queuing.
- 3Raids are 10-30 player instances with multiple bosses. Looking For Raid (LFR) is the easiest difficulty for beginners.
- 4Need vs Greed: only roll Need on items your class and spec can actually use.
- 5Raid lockouts prevent you from getting loot from the same boss twice per week (except LFR).
Professions & Economy
- 1You can learn two primary professions (Blacksmithing, Alchemy, Herbalism, Mining, etc.) and all secondary ones.
- 2Gathering professions (Mining, Herbalism, Skinning) are great for making gold while leveling.
- 3Crafting professions (Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, Tailoring) let you make gear but require gathered materials.
- 4Use the Auction House in major cities to buy and sell items to other players.
- 5Daily and weekly quests from your profession trainer give skill points and special recipes.
Endgame Content
- 1At max level, your main progression paths are Mythic+ dungeons, Raids, and PvP.
- 2The Great Vault rewards you weekly based on your best activities -- complete M+, raids, and PvP for more choices.
- 3World Quests and daily/weekly activities in current expansion zones provide reputation and gear.
- 4Join a guild for social gameplay, organized raiding, and access to guild perks and repairs.
- 5Addons like Deadly Boss Mods (DBM), WeakAuras, and Details! damage meter are highly recommended.
