Beginner's Guide to Slay the Spire
New to Slay the Spire? This guide covers deck building fundamentals, combat mechanics, relic strategy, and common mistakes to avoid.
Getting Started
- 1Start with The Ironclad. His healing relic (Burning Blood) is very forgiving for new players.
- 2Slay the Spire is a roguelike deckbuilder. Each run is unique with random cards, relics, and map layouts.
- 3You climb 3 acts (plus a secret Act 4) with combat, events, shops, campfires, and boss fights.
- 4Dying is expected and encouraged. Each death unlocks new cards and relics for future runs.
- 5Ascension levels (0-20) increase difficulty. Start at Ascension 0 and work your way up.
Deck Building Basics
- 1Smaller decks are usually better. Skip card rewards if nothing fits your strategy.
- 2Remove Strikes at shops whenever possible. They are your weakest attacks and dilute your deck.
- 3Build around a win condition: Strength scaling, poison stacking, orb generation, or stance dancing.
- 4Balance offense and defense. A deck full of attacks will crumble against hard-hitting enemies.
- 5Card upgrades at campfires are often more valuable than resting. Upgraded cards are significantly stronger.
Combat Tips
- 1Read enemy intent icons carefully. Sword = attack, shield = block/buff, skull = debuff.
- 2Focus down the most dangerous enemy first. Multi-attack enemies and buffers are top priority.
- 3Block is calculated per turn. Unused block disappears (unless you have Barricade or similar).
- 4Potions are free resources. Use them on elites and bosses, not regular hallway fights.
- 5Vulnerable (50% more damage taken) and Weak (25% less damage dealt) are extremely powerful debuffs.
Relics & Events
- 1Relics are passive bonuses collected from elites, bosses, events, and shops. They define your run.
- 2Boss relics (swap or reward) are game-changing. Energy relics are almost always worth taking.
- 3Events (? nodes) can give free upgrades, card transforms, relics, or max HP increases.
- 4Some events have risky options with huge payoffs. Learn which gambles are worth taking.
- 5Shop relics are expensive but often worth buying if they synergize with your deck.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- 1Do not take every card offered. An unfocused deck with too many cards is the most common way to lose.
- 2Do not skip elites entirely. You need the relics and card rewards to keep up with scaling difficulty.
- 3Do not ignore block cards. Pure offense decks fail against Act 2 and Act 3 enemies.
- 4Do not hoard potions for the boss. Using a potion on an elite to take zero damage is often better.
- 5Do not play cards just because you can. Sometimes ending your turn with unplayed cards is correct.
