Role Guide

Tank, Damage, and Support roles explained with tips and strategies.

🛡️

Tank

Tanks are the frontline of your team. In Overwatch 2, there is one tank per team (5v5), making the role incredibly impactful.

Responsibilities

  • 1Create and hold space for your team to operate in.
  • 2Absorb damage and protect teammates from enemy fire.
  • 3Initiate team fights and set the pace of engagements.
  • 4Peel for supports when they are being flanked.
  • 5Contest the objective and maintain map control.

Tips

  • *Do not overextend without your team -- you are the anchor.
  • *Track enemy ultimate abilities to know when to play safe.
  • *Communicate with your supports about when you need healing.
  • *Use natural cover alongside your abilities to survive longer.
  • *Learn multiple tank heroes to adapt to different team compositions.
⚔️

Damage

Damage heroes are responsible for securing eliminations and applying pressure. With two DPS slots, coordination between both damage players is crucial.

Responsibilities

  • 1Secure eliminations on priority targets (supports first).
  • 2Apply pressure to create openings for your tank.
  • 3Use flanking routes to attack from unexpected angles.
  • 4Break enemy shields and defensive setups.
  • 5Follow up on your tank's engagements with burst damage.

Tips

  • *Focus fire with your team instead of chasing solo kills.
  • *Track enemy support ultimates -- they can negate your plays.
  • *Use high ground advantage whenever possible for better angles.
  • *Learn when to be aggressive and when to play with your team.
  • *Communicate which targets you are focusing to your teammates.

Support

Supports keep the team alive and provide utility through healing, buffs, and crowd control. Two supports per team means strong healing output when coordinated.

Responsibilities

  • 1Keep your team alive with consistent healing output.
  • 2Enable plays with damage boosts, speed, or other utility.
  • 3Use defensive ultimates to counter enemy offensive ultimates.
  • 4Call out enemy flankers and help peel for each other.
  • 5Manage your healing priorities -- tank vs damage vs co-support.

Tips

  • *Stay alive -- a dead healer heals nothing. Prioritize survival.
  • *Position behind your team with sightlines to all allies.
  • *Do not tunnel vision on healing -- deal damage when the team is healthy.
  • *Track enemy flankers and communicate their position to your team.
  • *Coordinate ultimate usage with your co-support to avoid overlap.
