Beginner's Guide to Dead Cells
New to Dead Cells? This guide covers everything from scroll mechanics to combat fundamentals.
Understanding the Scroll System
- 1There are 3 scroll types: Brutality (red), Tactics (purple), and Survival (green). Each boosts damage for matching weapons.
- 2Always invest scrolls into your PRIMARY stat -- the one matching your main weapon and skills.
- 3Dual-stat scrolls let you choose which stat to level. Always pick your main stat.
- 4Each scroll also increases your HP. Survival scrolls give the most HP per point.
- 5Spreading scrolls evenly across all 3 stats is a trap -- focus on one for maximum damage scaling.
Scrolling Stats & Damage Scaling
- 1Weapon damage scales exponentially with scroll count. Going from 20 to 25 in one stat is a massive damage increase.
- 2Off-color weapons (weapons that don't match your main scroll) will deal significantly less damage in later biomes.
- 3Colorless weapons scale with your highest stat, making them valuable for any build.
- 4At higher Boss Cell difficulties, having 30+ in your main stat is expected by the final boss.
- 5Food and health fountains become scarcer at higher Boss Cells, making scroll-based HP less reliable.
Enemy Telegraphs & Combat
- 1Every enemy attack has a yellow exclamation mark (!) telegraph before it hits. Learn to react to this.
- 2Rolling gives invincibility frames (i-frames). Time your rolls to pass through attacks, not away from them.
- 3Most enemies have a specific pattern: approach, telegraph, attack, recovery. Punish during recovery.
- 4Elites have a yellow aura and enhanced versions of normal attacks. They also have an extra ability.
- 5Cursed chests kill you in one hit while cursed. Practice clearing curse on easy enemies first.
Parrying & Shields
- 1Parrying is performed by pressing the shield button just before an enemy attack connects.
- 2A successful parry stuns the attacker and deals counter-damage. Some shields have bonus effects on parry.
- 3The parry window is about 0.4 seconds. Practice on Zombies in Prisoners' Quarters.
- 4You can parry almost every attack in the game, including boss attacks and projectiles.
- 5Shields are especially powerful in Survival builds where the extra safety complements high HP.
Progression & Unlocks
- 1Cells dropped by enemies are used at the Collector (between biomes) to unlock new weapons and upgrades.
- 2Blueprints are rare drops from enemies or found in secret areas. Turn them in at the Collector.
- 3Permanent upgrades like Health Flask charges and gold reserves persist between runs.
- 4Boss Cells are earned by defeating the final boss and increase game difficulty with new mechanics.
- 5Each Boss Cell adds enemy malaise, reduces healing, and introduces new enemy types and behaviors.
