Essential tips for new Crusader Kings 3 players.
Start as Ireland in 1066
The tutorial island. Ireland in 1066 has small, weak neighbors and no major threats. Learn the basics of war, diplomacy, and succession here.
Focus on Your Heir
Your current character will die. Education of your heir matters more than anything else. Assign a guardian with high stats in the education focus you want.
Manage Vassal Opinion
Vassals with negative opinion will join factions against you. Keep powerful vassals happy with titles, marriages, gifts, and feast events.
Understand Succession
When you die, your realm splits between eligible heirs under Partition. Plan ahead by having fewer sons or giving extra sons titles before death.
Use the Council
Council positions provide bonuses based on councilor stats. Powerful vassals expect council seats. Denying them causes opinion penalties.
Do Not Expand Too Fast
More territory means more vassals to manage. Consolidate power in your current realm before expanding. Internal stability matters more than size.
Religion and Culture
Same faith and culture as your vassals gives opinion bonuses. Converting to local religions can stabilize conquered lands faster.
Choose Lifestyle Focuses
Each lifestyle (Diplomacy, Martial, Stewardship, Intrigue, Learning) has 3 focus trees. Choose based on your current needs -- war, money, or stability.
Build Holdings
Upgrade your capital holdings for income, levies, and development. Prioritize tax buildings and military buildings in your personal domain.
Alliances Through Marriage
Marry children to powerful rulers' families for alliances. Allies join your wars when called. Multiple alliances make you nearly invincible defensively.
