Beginner\'s Guide to Prey

New to Talos I? This guide covers survival, exploration, and neuromods.

Survival Basics

  • 1Save frequently -- Prey allows manual saves and you should abuse this.
  • 2Every object in the game can be recycled into crafting materials.
  • 3Repair broken turrets to create allies that watch your back.
  • 4The Psychoscope reveals enemy weaknesses -- scan every new Typhon type.
  • 5Mimics can disguise as any small object. Watch for duplicates of items.

Neuromod Choices

  • 1Human neuromods (Engineer, Scientist, Security) do not trigger turret aggro.
  • 2Installing Typhon neuromods causes turrets and operators to treat you as hostile.
  • 3Leverage, Hacking, and Repair are the three most universally useful human mods.
  • 4Mimic Matter allows accessing areas through small gaps -- incredibly versatile.
  • 5Your neuromod choices affect the ending -- both paths have consequences.

Exploration Strategy

  • 1Read emails on every computer -- they contain door codes and safe combinations.
  • 2Keycards are often found on corpses or in offices near locked doors.
  • 3The maintenance tunnels (GUTS) provide shortcuts between distant areas.
  • 4Mark undiscovered areas on your map to return to with new abilities.
  • 5Recycler charges can destroy environmental obstacles blocking paths.

Combat Tips

  • 1GLOO then hit is the fundamental combat loop for most of the game.
  • 2Explosive canisters deal massive damage -- Launch or throw them at groups.
  • 3Do not fight the Nightmare unless absolutely necessary early on.
  • 4Nullwave transmitters disable Typhon abilities temporarily.
  • 5Medkits and food heal but are limited. Invest in health-related neuromods.
